Aviation Alert: NCAA Urges Vigilance Amidst 3-Day Dust Haze, Issues Safety Measures for Pilots, Passengers

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has cautioned Pilots and Airline Operators to be vigilant during a three-day dust haze from January 29 to 31, 2024.

Acting Director General, Captain Chris Njomo, emphasized this advisory following the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NiMET) warning on potential visibility challenges due to observed dust haze across the country.

NiMET’s Sunday weather outlook predicted moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility ranging from 2km to 5km in the North.

The forecast anticipated similar conditions in the North Central, with localized horizontal visibility possibly falling below 1000m.

Dust haze is expected over the inland South and coastal regions throughout the forecast period.

Tuesday’s forecast for the northern region included an expectation of moderate dust haze with a horizontal visibility range of 2km to 5km.

The statement reiterated similar conditions for the North Central and the coastal regions of the South.

NiMet warned of thick dust haze persisting over the northern region throughout the forecast period, with a horizontal visibility range of 2km to 5km.

Additionally, localized visibility of less than or equal to 1000m is anticipated in the North Central, inland South, and coastal belt.

The public is advised to use face masks due to suspended dust particles, especially individuals with respiratory issues, while special attention to skin, eyes, and lips is recommended, encouraging moisturization.

Airline operators are urged to stay informed with updated weather reports from NiMet for effective operational planning.

The Authority emphasized passengers’ patience and understanding, prioritizing safety during this period.
