Engineers Urged to Move Beyond Theory in Addressing Insecurity

The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, Mr. Ali Alimasuya, has called on engineers across the country to take a leading role in tackling Nigeria’s security challenges through innovation and technology-driven solutions.

Speaking in Abuja at the inauguration of the 17th National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Mr. Dr. Babagana Tella, Mr. Alimasuya said insecurity must be approached as a complex system requiring structured, evidence-based engineering responses.

In a statement by the NSE, he described the event’s theme on engineering solutions to insecurity as timely, noting that mechanical engineering and the broader engineering profession are critical to industrial growth, resilient infrastructure, and modern national security systems.

According to him, addressing insecurity demands multidisciplinary solutions ranging from data analytics and surveillance technologies to local manufacturing, logistics optimisation, and sustainable infrastructure development.

He stressed that engineering remains fundamentally about problem-solving grounded in logic, modelling, and practical application.

Also speaking at the event, the Director General of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, Major General Babatunde Alaya, highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing and improve the effective deployment of security resources to support economic stability.

In a technical presentation, guest speaker Mr. Dr. Umar Bindir emphasised the importance of moving beyond theory, urging engineers to deliver implementable solutions integrated with social systems, investment frameworks, and institutional leadership to achieve measurable security outcomes.
