EU Mission Urges Nigeria to Fast-Track Electoral Reforms

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has called for urgent judicial and constitutional reforms in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Leading the delegation to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, head of the EU Mission to Nigeria’s 2023 polls and member of the European Parliament, Mr. Barry Andrews, said the visit was a follow-up on recommendations made after the last general election.

Mr. Andrews commended INEC for its cooperation and progress in strengthening democracy but emphasized that critical reforms were still outstanding.

Responding, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, urged the National Assembly to accelerate the review and passage of electoral reforms.

He cautioned that delays could disrupt preparations for the 2027 elections, warning that uncertainty over the legal framework might unsettle the Commission’s work.
