FG Inaugurates Vehicular Emissions Testing Centre in Nasarawa‎

‎The Federal Government has commissioned a Vehicular Emissions Testing Centre in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, aimed at improving air quality and curbing the health hazards associated with air pollution.

‎Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, who inaugurated the facility on Monday, described it as a milestone under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).

The event also coincided with the commemoration of the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies 2025.

‎According to the Minister, the centre represents “hope for clean air, healthier lungs, and a safer environment for Nigerians,” stressing that air pollution remains a silent killer that undermines public health, agriculture, and overall well-being.

‎He noted that air contamination cuts across social and economic divides, affecting both the young and old, and has been linked to severe conditions such as respiratory illnesses, heart disease, strokes, and even neurological disorders.

‎Lawal emphasized the need for urgent action, saying, “Since there is no substitute for air, it is critical we take steps now to prevent the situation from becoming irredeemable.”

‎The Minister explained that the new centre will serve as a hub for testing, research, and enforcement of policies on vehicular emissions.

He added that it will strengthen Nigeria’s climate commitments, safeguard public health, and promote sustainable development.

‎On her part, Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, Bahijjahtu Abubakar, praised Bhustan Energy, the Federal Ministry of Environment’s technical partner on the project, as well as the Nasarawa State Government for their support.

‎Abubakar stressed that clean air is a fundamental right and urged motorists to embrace the opportunity to check their vehicles’ emissions.

She disclosed plans for training Vehicle Inspection Officers with advanced IT tools to ensure effective implementation.

‎She also acknowledged the contributions of development partners, including UNIDO, UNEP, OXFAM, and UNDP, for providing technical and technological support.

‎Speaking for Bhustan Energy & Environmental Services Limited, Rotimi Olatunde said the facility will generate real-time data on carbon emissions and issue compliance certificates, thereby advancing Nigeria’s drive for cleaner transport systems.
