The Federal Government has signed a concession agreement for the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, in a move aimed at modernising Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure and improving service delivery.
The agreement was signed in Abuja by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, bringing to an end years of negotiations to reposition the airport through a public-private partnership with Aero Alliance.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Keyamo said the concession followed the approval of the Federal Executive Council granted on July 31, 2025, after which detailed engagements were held with the Ministry, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the concessionaire.
The Minister assured aviation workers that their welfare was fully protected, stressing that no staff member had been retrenched and that all existing employment conditions remain unchanged, with workers retaining their status as Federal Government and FAAN employees.
He noted that while the main agreement has been concluded, minor operational issues relating to security charges and financial arrangements are being finalised and would be resolved in the coming weeks to ensure smooth implementation.
Mr. Keyamo described the concession as a historic step that would enhance efficiency, improve passenger experience and reposition the Enugu Airport as a major aviation hub in the South-East.
The Enugu Airport concession is part of the Federal Government’s broader aviation reform programme designed to attract private investment, upgrade infrastructure, boost regional connectivity and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global aviation industry.
Officials of the Enugu State Government, representatives of Aero Alliance and top management of the Ministry of Aviation and FAAN attended the signing ceremony.
