Former Minister urges Nigerians on patronage of local fashion materials

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed wants Nigerians to contribute to the economy of the country by patronizing local fashion materials as against foreign alternatives.

Speaking during a fashion show in Lagos, Alhaji Lai Mohammed identified the textile and fashion industry as among the biggest with the capacity to turn around the economy of the country if the masses could wholly embrace local materials and designs.

Tagged in the Yoruba language as IBILE, the fashion show involved the showcasing of various designs of female dresses made with local fabrics such as admire, Asoke, and others.

It was an interesting sight watching female models hit the runway wearing the brand new collections amidst applause and chanting from spectators.

Speakers who were impressed with the uniqueness of the outfits showcased, said if only Nigerians would wholesomely embrace their own in their choice of outfits, the local fashion industry would grow astronomically and contribute immensely to the nation’s economy.

Among them was the former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed who lauded the organizer of the show for her determination to promote local fashion and designs.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed noted that African fashion, especially that of Nigeria has come to stay because of its uniqueness, as he called on the populace to patronize local designers as a way of encouraging them and promoting the cultures in the continent.

In her remark, the organizer of the show, Yeside Laguda said touring around many countries, she realized that African fashion indeed stands out, hence her determination to start promoting it in the interest of fashion-conscious Nigerian women and girls.

According to Laguda, Nigerians should be proud to wear local outfits, as they are not only suitable for every occasion but also make women look outstanding and complete.

The local fashion collections modeled at the occasion were among the newest designs introduced by the organizer of the show.

Fashion-loving Women and men including youths came in their numbers to watch the show.

There were also loads of side attractions including cultural performances that contributed to making the evening event a memorable one for participants.
