FRSC Launches Ember Months Safety Drive, Warns Against Distracted Driving

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched its annual Ember Months road safety campaign to promote responsible driving and reduce road crashes across Nigeria.

The campaign, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” emphasizes the need for motorists to prioritize focus and discipline while on the road.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, represented by the Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, said the theme underscores the role of human behaviour as a major cause of crashes, stressing that most accidents result from driver negligence such as speeding, fatigue, and phone use while driving.

Mohammed revealed that during the 2024 Operation Zero exercise, 432 persons lost their lives while 2,070 were injured in 533 reported crashes.

He attributed the major causes to overloading, fatigue, and the dangerous habit of carrying fuel in plastic containers, urging drivers to change their attitude towards safety.

To ensure safer highways, the FRSC has deployed personnel and Special Marshals nationwide, initiated free vehicle checks to promote roadworthiness, and planned nationwide motor park rallies and town hall meetings.

The Corps also intends to strengthen collaboration with transport unions, security agencies, and other critical stakeholders.

Highlighting sustained advocacy efforts, Mohammed said the FRSC has revived its Annual Lecture Series to raise awareness on road safety as a public health issue.

He added that the Corps has intensified partnerships with NGOs, civil society groups, and driving schools to improve driver training and compliance with vehicle safety standards.

Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat disclosed that Lagos State has recorded a 15.17 percent reduction in road traffic crashes this year—exceeding its 10 percent target—attributing the achievement to stricter enforcement and increased public enlightenment.

Hamzat further announced that the FRSC, in collaboration with Kwapda’s Road Safety Demands (KRSD), will host an international conference on road crash victims for Africa from November 16 to 18, 2025.

The event aims to strengthen post-crash care and align with the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety goals.
