Global Surveyor’s Day: NIS Lagos Tasks Surveyors on Improved Technological Skills

As Nigeria marks Global Surveyor’s Day, Surveyors have been challenged to hone their skills in technological advancement to meet the present day professionalism.

Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, NIS, Lagos State Branch, Chief Adedeji Owolabi Olanrewaju, threw the challenge while delivering a speech at the 2026 Global Surveyors’ Day Celebration, held at Alausa themed: “Surveyors Challenges In Multi Sectoral Growth”.

Represented by the NIS Lagos chapter Vice Chairman, Mr Moses Ogundare, identified key challenges confronting the profession as quackery, tech Integration amid costs workforce and skill gaps, regulatory navigation, Environmental Risks as well as Unsafe working conditions with impact efficiency.

While commending the Lagos state government for its policy on land grabbing, the Chairman urged practitioners to embrace mentorship to maintain their professional boundaries, while calling on the public to desist from patronizing quacks.

“This is very vital because the global digital twin market is projected to grow exponentially as industries accelerate their digital transformation. Geospatial data is fundamental to unlocking efficiency gains in many industries”

“Surveyors are best positioned to support this exponential demand for geospatial data.

However, surveyors need to find innovative ways to ensure their clients understand the value of their services”.

“Hence, surveyors ability to surmount these challenges isolated above and adapt favourably to the changing world they live in, will determine to a large extent how successful the multi-sectoral growth of any given geographic entity will be”. he said

Also speaking, the Chairman Association Of Private Practising Surveyor Of Nigeria, APPSN, Lagos State Branch, Mr Olaoluwa Afolabi, who spoke through the Vice Chairman, Mr Adams Olugbenga, implored surveyors to practice ethically and avoid supporting unlicensed operators while urging residents to desist from patronising quacks.

“Today, the day is marked by educational seminars, industry meetups, and online events around the world to highlight how surveying connects ancient land practices with modern global progress, from building construction and border demarcation to 3D mapping and artificial intelligence”

“On this note, I say congratulations to all surveyors all over the world on this day and encourage us all to practise ethnically and implore citizenship to desist from patronising the quacks”

The NIS Lagos branch event for the Global Surveyor’s Day marked annually on March 21, featured indoor games and aerobics as well as interactive sessions, while the acting Surveyor-General of Lagos, Mr Saliu Odupe sent his congratulatory message to professionals in the state restating supports to move the profession forward and ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
