Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu Approves Transformation of Obalende Bus Stop

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the transformation of the Obalende Bus Stop into a modern bus transport hub designed to redefine the Obalende loop, underbridge and adjoining lay-by in line with Lagos State’s mega-city vision.

The approval was disclosed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, who said construction work on the project will commence soon.

According to him, the redevelopment will introduce organised and regulated bus operations, supported by clearly labelled location signages to enhance commuter movement and orderliness.

The new facility, to be known as Y’ELLO Bus Park, will incorporate solar panels to promote long-term energy efficiency and significantly reduce the area’s carbon footprint.

It will also feature a dedicated recyclables drop-off station aimed at strengthening waste management and recycling culture within the community.

Mr Wahab added that tree planting is a key component of the project, targeted at improving air quality and enhancing the overall visual appeal of the Obalende environment.

The transport hub will also provide road camps for Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sweepers and security agencies, including the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) and the Neighbourhood Safety Agency, to reinforce sanitation and security.

Other planned facilities include food and beverage kiosks for commuters, ticketing booths and public toilets, a move expected to eliminate open defecation in the area.

According to the Commissioner, the project is community-centred and designed to improve public health, safety, aesthetics and overall livability, while contributing to a reduction in crime rates in Obalende and its environs.

He further explained that the redevelopment will help protect the integrity of the McGregor Canal, which frequently becomes silted and blocked, necessitating repeated clean-up interventions by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.

Mr Wahab noted that the Obalende Bus Stop has evolved into one of Lagos’ busiest transport corridors, serving as a major gateway linking Ikoyi and Victoria Island, while also providing access to the Mainland through the Third Mainland Bridge.

He observed that rapid urbanisation, population growth and informal economic activities have significantly altered the area’s character over time, leading to challenges such as illegal trading, poor waste management, unauthorised occupation by non-state actors, lack of greening, open defecation, shanties, illegal structures and vagrancy.

The Commissioner said Governor Sanwo-Olu’s recent visit to the area, during which the deteriorating state of the environment and its impact on security, public health, mobility and livability were observed, prompted the decision to embark on the comprehensive transformation.

Following the Governor’s visit, he said several interventions have already been carried out to restore order, including enforcement and clean-up exercises conducted by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in December 2025 and January 2026.
