HEWAN Mourns Veteran Health Journalist Matthew Ukachunwa

The Health Writers Association of Nigeria (HEWAN) has announced with deep sorrow the passing of one of its pioneer members, Mr. Matthew Ukachunwa of New Nigerian Newspapers Ltd.

According to a statement signed by HEWAN President, Vivian Ihechu, and Secretary, Temitope Obayendo, Ukachunwa passed away in the early hours of February 16, 2026, leaving what the association described as a significant void in Nigeria’s health reporting community.

The late journalist was described as a consummate professional, known for his discipline, punctuality and strong ethical standards.

HEWAN noted that he was meticulous in his reporting and served as a mentor to younger colleagues in the field.

President of HEWAN, Vivian Ihechu, said Ukachunwa was unwavering in his commitment to the association’s activities, adding that he was consistently present and prompt at engagements.

She described him as a pillar of the association whose constructive counsel and quiet excellence earned him widespread respect.

The association recalled that only days before his passing, he attended a capacity-building workshop for health writers, where he was recognised for arriving early—an attribute that colleagues said reflected his lifelong dedication to professionalism.

HEWAN extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, the management of New Nigerian Newspapers Ltd, and the broader journalism community, praying for strength for his loved ones during this period of grief.
