The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, has reaffirmed the vital role of sports in promoting youth development, discipline, and national unity.
Mr. Hunpe made this known while serving as Chairman of the Occasion at the 48th Annual Inter-House Athletic Competition of Federal Government College, Ijanikin, Lagos.
Addressing the school management, staff, parents, invited guests, and students, the Chairman described the institution as a pride of the Badagry Division, noting its consistent excellence in academics, character formation, leadership development, and sports.
He emphasized that sporting activities remain one of the most effective platforms for discovering talents, instilling discipline, and fostering unity among young people.
Highlighting his administration’s commitment to youth engagement through sports, Mr. Hunpe revealed that he has personally organized annual table tennis competitions in his community for the past six years to discover talents and promote unity.
He added that his role at the event also provided an opportunity to understudy the institution’s sporting programmes with a view to replicating and improving similar initiatives within the local government.
In appreciation of the school’s positive impact on his children, the Chairman donated the sum of one million naira to support the institution.
He also presented two hundred and fifty thousand naira to Moremi House, where his daughter belonged during her time in the school, to provide refreshments for participants during the competition.
In his remarks, the Director-Principal, Dr. Famuyibo Tokunbo, stated that the 48th Annual Inter-House Athletic Competition goes beyond winning trophies and medals, describing it as a celebration of sportsmanship, determination, and discipline.
He stressed that while academics shape the mind, sports contribute significantly to the holistic development of students by teaching leadership, teamwork, cooperation, resilience, and the ability to win or lose gracefully while building lasting memories and values.
The colourful event featured enthusiastic participation from students, strong support from parents and staff, and spirited competition among the various houses, reflecting the institution’s sustained commitment to holistic youth development.
The council boss was accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Taiwo Towolawi; Chief Security Adviser, CSP Adagba Johnson; and other aides.
