Kwara Assembly Urges Action Against GMO Seeds Over Health Risks

The Kwara State House of Assembly has raised concerns over the potential dangers of genetically modified organisms (GMO) seeds, calling on the state government to launch an extensive awareness campaign on their health and environmental implications.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent importance titled “Need to discourage farmers from planting genetically modified organisms seeds in order to enhance food security in Kwara State,” moved by Hon. Mohammed Kareem Musa, representing Patigi Constituency.

Leading debate on the motion, Hon. Musa warned that the consumption of genetically engineered food poses risks to biodiversity, traditional farming systems, and long-term food security.

He urged agricultural extension workers across the state to step up efforts in sensitizing farmers about the dangers of embracing GMO seeds.

Several lawmakers who contributed to the debate stressed that while GMO seeds continue to gain global attention, their proliferation should be discouraged in Kwara to protect public health and preserve indigenous farming practices.

In his ruling, Speaker Engr. Yakubu Danladi Salihu directed all local government councils in the state to establish demonstration farms that will practically illustrate the risks associated with planting GMO seeds.

The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture and protecting the well-being of Kwara residents.
