Journalists have been urged to ensure that their reportage ahead of the 2027 general elections reflects professionalism, balance and strict adherence to ethical standards.
The Editor-in-Chief of NewsNow, Taiwo Olapade, gave the charge while delivering the 2025 Annual Press Week lecture of the Lagos State Governor’s Office Correspondents at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.
Speaking on the theme, “Election and Ethical Journalism: The Role of the Media in Safeguarding Democracy,” Olapade warned that the media possesses enormous power to shape public perception and national stability. Citing the Rwandan genocide, he cautioned that irresponsible reportage could have devastating consequences, not only for society but also for journalists.
He therefore urged media practitioners to remain guided by professional ethics, avoid partisan reporting and exercise caution when covering sensitive issues, particularly those relating to national security, to prevent incitement and possible litigation.
Also speaking, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, emphasised the need for accuracy and factual reporting, noting that elections are serious national exercises that demand responsibility from the media. On political defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress, he dismissed fears that such developments could turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
In a goodwill message, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Lagos State Council, Adeleye Ajayi, represented by the Vice Chairman, Philip Nwosu, urged journalists to resist sensationalism and the spread of misinformation, especially in the digital age.
Earlier, Chairman of LAGOCO, George Okojie, said the Press Week was designed to remind journalists of their critical role ahead of the 2027 elections, urging them to discharge their duties without fear or favour.
The lecture was attended by officials including the Director of Administration at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Adebunmi Da-Silva, as well as press officers from various ministries.
The lecture formed part of activities marking the 2025 Press Week of LAGOCO.
