Lagos Assembly Approves New University to Boost Healthcare

The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed into law the bill establishing the University of Medicine and Health Sciences, marking a major step toward strengthening the state’s healthcare system.

The bill, which outlines the structure, functions, and governance of the proposed institution, was approved after it scaled its third reading on the floor of the House.

Lawmakers unanimously adopted the committee report after thoroughly reviewing its provisions and considering feedback from stakeholders at a public hearing.

The establishment of the new university is expected to address the shortage of medical professionals, expand training opportunities, and boost indigenous medical research capacity in Lagos State—ultimately enhancing the quality and resilience of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
