Lagos Judiciary Assigns Coroner for Afriland Tower Fire Probe

The Lagos State Judiciary has appointed a coroner to investigate the deaths of ten victims who lost their lives in the recent Afriland Tower fire tragedy.

The move follows a formal request by human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), who urged the Chief Coroner of Lagos State to initiate an inquest into the incident.

In a letter signed by Mr. Taiwo Olawanle on behalf of Falana & Falana Chambers, the firm cited Section 15 of the Lagos State Coroner’s Law, 2007, which mandates an inquest into deaths occurring under violent, unnatural, or suspicious circumstances.

Confirming the development, the Lagos State Judiciary disclosed that the case has been assigned to Coroner Court 9 of the Igbosere District, sitting at Court 4, Yaba Magisterial District.

A notice signed by Senior Magistrate Adetunji stated that a preliminary meeting with relevant stakeholders will hold on Tuesday, October 14, to determine the framework and timeline for the inquest.

The tragic fire, which occurred last month, reportedly started after smoke was detected from the building’s inverter room, leading to multiple fatalities.
