Lagos Set to Unveil Upgraded Waterfront Attractions for Detty December

The Lagos State Government has announced that residents and holiday visitors will experience a more vibrant and modernised waterfront atmosphere this Detty December, following new reforms designed to strengthen the state’s tourism landscape.

The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Mr. Dayo Alebiosu, revealed this in a statement issued on Sunday after the Lagos Tourism and Hospitality Stakeholders’ Summit hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

The summit, themed “Unlocking the Potentials and Opportunities of Lagos Tourism: Collaboration and Partnership for a Greater Lagos,” brought together industry experts to evaluate how Lagos can better harness its tourism assets.

Alebiosu said the state is determined to offer a festive season that clearly reflects its commitment to building a modern and globally competitive tourism environment.

He noted that the state’s extensive waterways remain a major advantage that must be developed to match leading international destinations.

“Tourism is about creating memorable experiences, and December brings the world to Lagos.

We must therefore ensure that our waterfronts project the quality seen in advanced coastal cities like those in Scandinavia or areas such as Palm Jumeirah,” he said.

He explained that waterfront development and reclamation require strict regulation, accuracy and long-term planning. According to him, Lagos has now strengthened its approval processes to ensure that all new waterfront projects comply with global standards.

Alebiosu expressed concern over the layout of some waterfront communities, saying many developments turn their backs to the water instead of embracing it.

“When buildings face the road and completely block the water, it defeats the intention of having a waterfront city,” he said.

He revealed that the state has begun upgrading several jetties and replacing old pontoons with modern concrete models, describing the improvements as a significant step up from previous infrastructure.

He added that Lagos is awaiting final clearance to begin the long-delayed boardwalk project at the Wole Olateju waterfront, which has remained largely unused despite its prime location.

The commissioner also confirmed that the Bariga jetty is undergoing a redesign that will transform it into a modern fish market, a move aimed at boosting water-based commerce and leisure activities.

He further stated that the government is in discussions with LAGFERRY and the Ministry of Transportation to relocate certain jetties situated in inappropriate areas.

“We do not undertake reclamation in isolation.

We partner with private developers and ensure that all processes adhere to international best practices,” he said.

With the festive season drawing close, Alebiosu assured residents and visitors that the impact of the ongoing reforms will soon be visible.

“Our objective is to position Lagos as Africa’s most exciting and welcoming festive destination.

The upgrades along our waterfronts will speak loudly this December,” he added.
