The Lagos State Government has announced plans to replicate the Ikosi-Ketu Market biodigester project across major markets in the state, as part of efforts to promote sustainable waste management and advance the circular economy.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this at the official inauguration of the Ikosi-Ketu Biodigester Project.
Dr. Gbadegesin described the facility as a model initiative for treating organic market waste at source, noting that it would significantly reduce dependence on landfills.
He explained that Ikosi-Ketu Market generates an average of 30 tonnes of waste daily, with about 90 per cent being organic, making it highly suitable for biodigestion.
According to him, the project demonstrates how market waste can be efficiently converted into clean energy and other valuable by-products.
He noted that markets are among the largest contributors to organic waste generation in Lagos, stressing that replicating the biodigester model would help curb indiscriminate dumping, reduce waste evacuation costs, ease pressure on landfills and improve overall environmental sanitation.
Dr. Gbadegesin added that the initiative aligns with the state’s circular economy agenda, as it produces clean cooking gas, electricity and organic fertiliser, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating flooding risks.
He further disclosed that market stakeholders had been trained to operate the facility, assuring that LAWMA would continue to provide technical support as similar biodigester projects are deployed across other markets in the state.
