The Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) has unveiled two additional health insurance packages designed specifically for Nigerians living abroad and visitors entering the state.
The announcement was made during the 2025 fourth-quarter media parley held in Alausa, Ikeja.
Permanent Secretary of LASHMA, Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, said the new packages—Ilera-Eko Waka-Well and Ilera-Eko Home Konnect—were created to meet the rising demand for diaspora-focused healthcare solutions.
“These plans reflect our commitment to ensuring no one is left behind,” she said.
She added that the products align with Lagos State’s mandatory health insurance framework and ongoing reforms to expand universal health coverage (UHC).
Innovations Strengthening Lagos Health Insurance
Dr. Zamba also highlighted recent innovations introduced under LASHMA, including telemedicine services, the Ilera-Eko Academy, the Ilera-N’tiwa Cooperative scheme, and the Ilera-Eko Spotlight Online Radio—Nigeria’s first health insurance radio platform.
She noted that earlier adjustments to maternal and surgical services have started yielding positive results without reducing the benefits accessible to families on the Lagos State Health Scheme.
New Packages to Serve Diaspora and Traveller
“Rebranding the diaspora package into two distinct plans will better serve travellers and families abroad,” Zamba explained.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Diaspora and Foreign Relations, Mr. Jermaine Sanwo-Olu, praised the initiative as a “groundbreaking innovation” in Africa’s health insurance landscape.
He said the Waka-Well plan was created to meet the needs of returnees during festive seasons like Detty December, ensuring affordable and immediate health coverage for illnesses common among travellers.
Under the plan:A 90-day cover costs ₦45,000 and Multiple or extended stays cost ₦75,000
It includes emergency care, diagnostics, telemedicine, malaria and typhoid treatment, dental and eye care, and local ambulance evacuation.
Home Konnect: Health Insurance for Families Living in Lagos
The Home Konnect plan targets over 20 million Nigerians living abroad who struggle with irregular medical remittances.
“This plan provides sustainable, structured healthcare support for loved ones in Lagos,” Jermaine said.
It covers consultations, chronic disease management, surgeries, maternal and newborn care, physiotherapy, and annual wellness screenings.
Affordability and Mandatory Coverage for Lagos Residents
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mr. Olanrewaju Bajulaiye, described Ilera-Eko as the most affordable option available to Lagos residents.
He emphasized that a family of six can enjoy full coverage for ₦180–₦220 per day, less than the cost of a sachet of paracetamol.
