Some supermarkets under lock for selling unregistered products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, said some products in the supermarket are  not registered and  have been cleared because they are considered fake, although they will be taken to the lab for analysis.

Some of the products collected are, assorted bathing soup, day creams, collagen, vitamin C, moisturizer, hair cream, face and body scrubs, Shea scrub, balm, Nivea, Sun protection kits and aloe vera.

The three managers of the supermarkets visited pleaded anonymity, while two  claimed they have documents to back the products and  promised to make them available, the third person Pleaded guilty and also promised to tender the necessary documents available to him  when invited for questioning.

The Team Lead, Assistant Director,  Investigation and Enforcement, NAFDAC, Mr Ushadari Kayam, in an interview with Radio Nigeria, after the raid, explained that, the products were many and the owners of supermarkets kept storing and selling unregistered products despite series of warnings and awareness.

” Some of the products are unregistered, fake and adulterated, which means that they will undergo investigation”,  adding that, the owners of the supermarkets have been invited “. Kayam

” These supermarkets are big and such products are not expected to be sold there, it shows some Nigerians are not learning “. NAFDAC will continue to do it’s job of sanitizing the society of fake and unwholesome products in accordance with the mandate of the organization ” . He stressed

Similarly, at the Trade Fair market some unregistered and dangerous cosmetic products were also evacuated from some plazas to subject them to laboratory analysis to ensure that the public is safe in the use of cosmetic and other regulated products.

Mr Dare Moses, an Assistant Director, NAFDAC, in the Department of Investigation and Enforcement, who led the team said,  ” We have removed the suspected products and we will subject them to lab analysis “. 

 “‘ The result will determine what will happen, but we will definitely cannot return the goods to them as they are not registered products, they will be sent for future destruction “. He stressed

According to Mr  Moses, by the time we finish the investigation, it is either the suspects are prosecuted or they are highly fined so that they will not go back to the fraudulent activity.

” We will still need to get to the root to find out where they got the product, so that we can do the needful to stop the importation of some of these wholesale” he noted.

There were two teams, three shops were locked. The goods seized will be evaluated for proper documentation.
