LASEMA, NEMA Begin Enumeration Exercise for Victims of GNI Building Fire Incident

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, have commenced enumeration exercise for victims of the Great Nigeria building at Marina, which was gutted by fire last December.

Permanent Secretary LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu who made this known to newsmen said the exercise will hold from today February 9 to 13th at the Adeyemi Bero auditorium, Alausa.

Dr Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the enumeration exercise was part of ongoing post-incident recovery activities and urged members of the public who are affected to show up and participate in the exercise.

According to the PS LASEMA, the exercise is essential for documentation, recovery support, and appropriate follow-up actions.

He encouraged members of the public to cooperate fully with officials on ground noting that updates will be communicated as necessary.

Deputy Director, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mrs Adeokumi Ajoke, said the exercise marked the commencement of the enumeration of victims affected by the December 24, 2025 fire incident.

She explained that the enumeration, being carried out alongside LASEMA and other safety responders, was aimed at identifying affected buildings, shop owners and victims, noting that lives and properties were lost in the incident.

According to her, the exercise would enable the government to determine the extent of damage and provide appropriate assistance, following the directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Mrs Adeokumi added that the Lagos State Safety Commission was also conducting risk assessments on buildings, particularly market structures, to identify hazards and develop preventive solutions to mitigate future occurrences.

She said the collaboration with LASEMA and local government authorities would strengthen safety planning and contribute significantly to reducing fire outbreaks and other hazards across Lagos State.
