The long-standing friendship between Nigeria and China received a boost as both countries converged in Abuja for the 2026 China–Nigeria Martial Arts Cultural Exchange Event, held as part of activities marking the Chinese Lunar New Year celebration.
The colourful event, organised by the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria in collaboration with Nigerian Wushu bodies, brought together martial arts experts, cultural diplomats, students and enthusiasts to celebrate the Year of the Horse while deepening people-to-people relations between both nations.
Speaking at the event, a representative of the China Cultural Centre, Mr. Yang Jianxing, described the exchange as a symbol of the growing relationship between Nigeria and China.
He said martial arts provide a platform for cultural interaction and mutual understanding between the two countries.
According to him, the celebration allows Nigerians to experience Chinese culture at close range, while serving as a bridge that connects the peoples of both nations. He added that martial arts reflect values of respect, resilience and peace.

The event also coincided with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China, as well as the declaration of 2026 as the China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, further underscoring the importance of cultural cooperation.
Representing the Nigeria Wushu Kungfu Federation, the North Central Zonal Representative, Mr. Sesan Adeboyejo, commended the growing popularity of Wushu among Nigerian youths.
He linked the development to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which promotes youth participation in sports as a driver of job creation and national development.
Adeboyejo recalled remarks by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Yu Dunhai, who had described Wushu as a universal language that transcends borders.
He appealed to Chinese companies operating in Nigeria to support Wushu development through sponsorships, training facilities and exchange programmes.
The celebration featured cultural performances, martial arts demonstrations by Chinese and Nigerian practitioners, and exhibitions showcasing Chinese New Year symbols across Abuja communities.
