The Lagos State Government has commenced a series of events to mark the maiden edition of its Civil Service Insurance Week.
At a news conference in Alausa Ikeja, signifying the commencement of the week long activities, the Commissioner for Finance, Mr Rabiu Olowo said the Insurance Week is geared towards instituting the culture of insurance consciousness among government Officials and residents of the State as a whole.
Mr. Olowo who pointed out that the State Government had over the years been insuring its staff and paying premium to cater for them during service and also payment of death benefits to dependants explained that the insurance week was conceptualized following a discovery that many of the State workforce were not aware of the existence of a professional Insurance Department domiciled in the Ministry of Finance
The Commissioners said that it was therefore necessary to educate not just the State workforce alone, but the entire residents of Lagos on the need to insure themselves.
Mr. Olowo noted that with insurance premiums, the burden on government would be lessened, whenever disaster occurs.
” In many times our citizenry call on the government when they seek compensation for some natural disasters, unfortunate incidences, such thing will become a thing of the past, as we have necessary insurance cover for our businesses and property, by this the resources at the disposal of the government can be channel into other developmental projects, instead of paying compensations ordinarily that would have been taking care of by the insurance industry”.
On his part, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Mr. Shina Thorpe, harped on the benefits of insurance to Lagos State Civil Servants, and also for the masses.
” An unexpected can happen at anytime and insurance will take care because it is going to be shared risk, you must be on top of the game, so that when the eventuality happens or the uncertainty, you know that you are covered.
” The state government is always very proactive in ensuring that employees and residents of Lagos really take by insuring their business, when we are talking of the 21st century economy, insurance is very key in the course of moving forward”.
The Lagos Civil Service Insurance Week, has as its theme” If you can be insured, we’ll bear your risk’.
