Law to back creation of emergency management centres in all local govt advocated

Representatives of Local Governments in Lagos West Senatorial District have advocated a legal framework for the establishlishment of a response emergency centre in all the council areas of the state to effectively manage disasters, especially those associated with flooding.

They made the call in Alausa, Ikeja, at a stakeholders’ meeting on how to mitigate flooding in the state, organised by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA.

Speaking on behalf of the representatives, the Council Manager of Ojokoro LCDA, Mr Adebola Adeyemo, said the recommendations, they believe, would effectively reduce challenges leading to flooding.

On his part, the Chairman of Ojokoro LCDA, Mr Hammed Idowu-Tijani called for the empowerment of customary courts in each local government to try environmental offenders to check indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu who directed all the Council Chairmen to revive local emergency committees in their Councils, promised that the Agency would train and retrain members of the committee on emergencies and disasters management

Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu reiterated that the Sanwo-Olu’s administration had invested so much into the security of lives and property and appealed to the people to make use of the 767 and 112 emergency toll free numbers.
