The Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, has reported a significant increase in passenger traffic and revenue generation, with the airport’s management attributing this growth to its strategic location and ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure.
According to the Airport Manager, Kano, Comrade Ahmed Danjuma, the airport’s domestic and international terminals are operational, with a total of 11 airlines operating from the airport, including Maxair, Air Peace, and Qatar Airways.
In terms of passenger traffic, the airport recorded an average of 20,472 domestic inbound passengers and 21,278 outbound passengers in April, while international passenger traffic stood at 18,687 inbound and 6,787 outbound.
The airport also handled a significant amount of cargo, with 16,176 tons of domestic cargo and 788,359 tons of international imports, as well as 161,367 tons of exports.
The airport’s revenue generation has also seen a significant boost, with the airport exceeding its target of 17.3 billion naira for 2024 by over 3.8 billion naira, generating a total of 20.83 billion naira.
The airport’s management has attributed this growth to its focus on non-aero revenue streams, including the development of unused lands and facilities within the airport.
To further boost revenue generation, the airport’s management is exploring opportunities to attract more businesses to the airport, including the development of a hotel within the domestic terminal site.
The airport is also working to improve its infrastructure, including the renovation of the Dankabo terminal, which is expected to be completed soon.
The airport’s management has also expressed concerns about the state of the runway pavement, which has outlived its lifespan and requires resurfacing.
However, the Managing Director has assured that the airport has been captured for resurfacing, and contractors are currently taking samples and measurements to prepare for the project.
Overall, the Kano Airport is experiencing steady growth in passenger traffic and revenue generation, driven by its strategic location and ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure.
With its focus on non-aero revenue streams and infrastructure development, the airport is well-positioned for continued growth and development in the future.

Revenue Generation on the Upswing
Comrade Danjuma reported that the airport exceeded its 2024 revenue projection of N17.3 billion, generating over N20.83 billion in the last year.
He attributed this success to a focus on non-aeronautical revenue streams, which are expected to contribute significantly to the airport’s revenue while plans are underway to attract more businesses to the airport, leveraging its strategic location and available land.
Infrastructure Development
The airport is undergoing significant infrastructure development, including the renovation of the domestic terminal, currently underway. The new terminal, when completed, is expected to provide a world-class experience for travelers.
He also highlighted the need for a total resurfacing of the runway, which has outlived its lifespan since 2011.
However, he assured that the airport’s management has assured him that Kano has been captured for resurfacing, and contractors have been taking samples and measurements.
Passenger Traffic and Facilities
The airport’s passenger traffic has been steadily increasing, with 20,472 domestic inbound passengers and 21,278 outbound passengers recorded in April. International passenger traffic also saw 18,687 inbound and 6,787 outbound passengers.
The MAKIA airport manager acknowledged that some facilities, such as the old international terminal, require attention, but efforts are being made to maintain and upgrade them.
Improving Shuttle Services
To address concerns about expensive shuttle services, Comrade Danjuma has initiated discussions with unions and operators to introduce more competitive and affordable options.
A new shuttle bus service for staff is also being planned, which will run from the departure area to the airport’s runabout.
Partnerships and Collaborations
The airport manager emphasized the importance of partnerships with concessionaires, auxiliary service providers, and ground handlers.
He reported a positive relationship with these stakeholders, with most operating in compliance with regulations.
Future Outlook
Comrade Danjuma’s ambitious plan for the Kano Airport aims to transform it into a world-class facility, with a focus on non-aeronautical revenue generation, improved passenger experience, and infrastructure development.
With a strong team and support from the management, he is confident that the airport will achieve its goals and become a major hub in Nigeria.
