NAWOJ Lagos Marks IWD, Demands Mentorship, Digital Skills, Better Welfare

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, commemorated International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026 with a high-level lecture and panel discussion focused on strengthening the professional growth and welfare of female journalists.

The event, held on March 11 at the NUJ Press Centre in Ikeja, carried the theme “Give to Gain: Empowering Women Journalists through Mentorship and Advocacy for a Stronger Voice and Enhanced Welfare.”

In her opening remarks, NAWOJ Lagos Chairperson, Mrs. Jumoke Johnson, described women as “natural multipliers,” stressing that mentorship among female journalists can significantly improve productivity and resilience within the media industry.

She urged experienced professionals to give their time, knowledge, and advocacy to younger colleagues in order to build a stronger and safer media environment for women.

Delivering the keynote address, veteran media mentor and Executive Director of the Media Career Development Network, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, challenged journalists to take charge of their career development.

He emphasized the need for continuous improvement through digital and technical skills, greater assertiveness in pursuing career opportunities, and a strong commitment to mentorship and passion for journalism.

A panel session moderated by Tosin Alayande featured Olufunke Fayemi of Voice of Nigeria and Blessing Oladunjoye, Publisher of BONews.

The discussion highlighted the importance of advocacy, inclusive reporting that reflects the experiences of persons with disabilities, and the value of specialized journalism in building credibility and influence in the media space.

Participants concluded the event with key resolutions including establishing a deliberate mentorship culture among female journalists, intensifying advocacy for improved welfare and working conditions, and encouraging members to master digital tools and specialized reporting.

The gathering, attended by senior media leaders and NUJ officials, ended with a renewed pledge by NAWOJ Lagos to remain a strong voice for empowerment and excellence in Nigeria.
