The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, on Friday, January 31, 2026, held its first Congress of the year, setting the agenda for its programmes and advocacy activities in 2026.
The Congress brought together members of the association for strategic deliberations, capacity-building sessions, and the formal unveiling of the NAWOJ Lagos 2026 Activities Calendar, marking a significant milestone in the chapter’s activities.
Speaking at the Congress, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, Comrade Jumoke Johnson, described the gathering as a purposeful platform for strengthening the association and repositioning women journalists for greater professional relevance and societal impact.
“This Congress sets the tone for the year. Beyond bonding, we are committed to equipping our members with relevant skills, amplifying women’s voices, and driving initiatives that positively impact society,” Johnson said.
A major highlight of the Congress was a Financial Literacy for Women in Media training session facilitated by Mr. Olalekan Otun.

The training provided practical insights into personal finance management, investment planning, and financial sustainability for women journalists.
Participants actively engaged the facilitator through robust questions and interactive discussions, reflecting the relevance of financial empowerment to both their professional and personal lives.

The Congress also featured the unveiling and extensive discussion of the NAWOJ Lagos 2026 Activities Calendar, structured across four quarters and designed to address professional development, family life, humanitarian outreach, and societal concerns.
The Chairperson also used the opportunity to call on organisations, corporate bodies, and development partners to collaborate with NAWOJ Lagos through sponsorships and strategic partnerships to ensure the successful implementation of its programmes.
In her remarks, the Secretary of NAWOJ Lagos, Comrade Anu M. Thomas, noted that the year’s activities were deliberately designed to be people-centred and impactful.
“Our activities this year speak to career advancement, family life, and our responsibility to society at large,” she said.
The Congress ended on a positive note, with members expressing satisfaction with the outcomes and optimism about the association’s direction for the year.
Overall, participants described the Congress as productive, engaging, and impactful, reinforcing NAWOJ Lagos’ commitment to empowerment, advocacy, and professional excellence.
