NCC to ensure compactiblity of 5G network with Aircraft functions

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communucations Commission NCC, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta has said that technical measures are being put in place to ensure the compactiblity of Fifth generation mobile technology, 5G with Aircraft functions particularly on the concerns raised about 5G interference with aircraft’s radio Altimeter.
Professor Danbata made the remark at the 90th Edition of NCC Consumer Parliament held in Lagos with the theme “”5G Technology: Opportunities and Challenges””
Professor Danbatta who described the Telecom Consumer Parliament (TCP), as the Commission’s flagship stakeholder engagement forum pointed out that the Commission chose the theme“5G Technology: Opportunities and Challenges” in line with it’s commitment to provide regulatory support that will deepen the adoption and deployment of technology that promotes broadband penetration.
He said that the Commission is leveraging on the support of the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy to implement the policies and would continue to collaborate with stakeholders across sectors to ensure faster deployment of 5G services to further accelerate the growth of Nigeria’s broadband infrastructure.

Professor Danbatta noted that the final letters of award have been issued to MTN and Mafab Communications, who emerged winners of the 3.5GHz spectrum auction conducted in December 2021 and they are expected to commence roll out of 5G services from August 24, 2022.
Apart from concerns raised about health implications of 5G network there are also fears that “5G interference with the aircraft’s radio altimeter could prevent engine and braking systems from transitioning to landing mode, which could prevent an aircraft from stopping on the runway.
Professor Danbatta said technical measures are being put in place to ensure compactiblity of 5G services with aircraft functions, marine services and other services that will coexist harmoniously in the same operational environment without one interfering with the other.
Pointing out that NCC would ensure electromagnetic compactiblity with other services.
The Director Technical Standards and network integrity in NCC Mr Bako Wakii who said 5g is very safe with lot of economic benefits and potentials listed some challenges including right of way and urged some communities that are rejecting sites to corporate.
The Telecom consumers appealled to NCC to ensure transparency in the process.
High point of the event was a panel discussion moderated by the Executive Commissioner Stakeholders Management in NCC Mr Adewolu Adeleke who chaired the panel session, urged all participants to exploit the opportunities offered by the 90th TCP to contribute to the deployment of 5G Network in Nigeria.
“We must conclude this Telecom Consumer Parliament with solutions to challenges that are associated with 5G deployment in countries that had deployed the services ahead of Nigeria. We must also have a clear roadmap on how the opportunities offered by the technology can be maximized for the benefit of Nigerians””…. Mr Adeleke said.
It will be recalled that the Federal Government on September 8, 2021 approved the deployment of the Fifth Generation Network Policy. Following the approval, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Pantami directed NCC to implement the 5G policy for the country.
