Nigeria Air: Ex Aviation Minister accuses lawmaker of 5% equity bribe

The immediate past Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Mr. Nnolim Nnaji has denied asking for 5% equity from the proposed National Carrier, Nigeria Air.

The denial is coming on the heels of the allegation by the former Minister of Aviation Senator Hadi Sirika during a live television programme that the lawmaker demanded a 5% equity bribe for the project.

In an interview with Radio Nigeria, Mr. Nnaji said, the former minister should genuinely answer the questions raised by the National Assembly, industry stakeholders and Nigerians why he deceived them with a chartered aircraft painted Nigeria Air as the nation’s national carrier and stop dodging the issues at hand.

“That is complete fraud and that is the area where Hadi need to look into, you cannot deceive Nigerians that there is a Nigerian air and to unveil it you will go and charter a plane. You can not continue to deceive Nigerians, that is my position and that is the position of the house committee on aviation”.

The former minister, Hadi Sirika had disclosed on a live interview that if the committee chairman described the project as a fraud, it means he did not carry out his constitutional duty of proper oversight of the industry.

He insisted, Mr. Nnaji asked for a 5% equity as bribe for the Nigeria Air project, adding that he has evidence.

“He said he wants him and his people, his people could be his family, could be members, could be leadership, I didn’t know what he means but him and his people 5%, am saying that he should relax and approach the owners, that’s exactly what I told him in camera”.

The Nigeria Air project has been enmeshed in many controversies from inception leading to accusations and counter accusations from actors with the recent unveiling of the Nigeria Air aircraft owned by Ethiopian airlines.
