The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, says, flight disruptions across Nigeria’s aviation sector appear to be easing, even as seasonal challenges loom.
Speaking with newsmen in Lagos, the Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, NCAA, Mr. Michael Achimugu said, recent data shows a noticeable improvement in delays and cancellations compared to the last quarter of 2025, following a drop in passenger traffic after the festive season.
However, he cautioned that the onset of the rainy season could trigger fresh disruptions, noting that weather-related challenges remain a significant factor in airline operations.
Mr. Achimugu illustrated the situation with a personal experience of multiple flight disruptions on a recent trip, underscoring that while improvements have been recorded, operational setbacks are still common.
The NCAA Director expressed optimism about the near future, pointing to outcomes from the recent Aircraft Acquisition Summit hosted by the Minister of Aviation.
He said agreements reached at the event are expected to boost aircraft availability in 2026, which should further reduce disruptions across the sector.
On passenger complaints, he revealed that travellers are increasingly using the NCAA’s complaint portal, although some still struggle with technical requirements when submitting cases.
As a result, the agency continues to provide alternative channels, including email and social media, to ensure complaints are captured and addressed.
Reacting to allegations by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, regarding possible airfare price-fixing by some domestic airlines, Mr. Achimugu said his office has not received any official report on the matter.
He reiterated his earlier position rejecting claims by operators that rising ticket prices were driven mainly by taxes.
Mr. Achimugu stressed the need for better communication between airlines and passengers, noting that a gap in understanding often fuels dissatisfaction.
According to him, airlines must strengthen public awareness efforts to explain operational realities, while the NCAA remains open to collaboration in educating the flying public and supporting industry stability.
