Nigeria Face Olympic Champions as Hosts Enjoy Opening Day Wins in 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

The 2023 FIFA women’s world cup kicked off today with co-hosts New Zealand and Australia enjoying confidence boosting victories.

In Auckland Hannah Wilkinson’s second half strike earned New Zealand a 1nil win over former champions Norway in group A while one of the favourites Australia pipped debutants Republic of Ireland 1nil in a group B matchup with Arsenal’s Stephanie Catley dispatching a penalty in the 52nd minute.

Meanwhile Nigeria’s Super Falcons will be in action in another pool B game in Melbourne where they will confront Olympic champions Canada in the early hours of tomorrow morning before taking on Australia and Republic of Ireland in their last group game.

The Nigeria vs Canada game comes up at 3:30am while Philippines and Switzerland will clash in group A and group C will have Spain up against Costa Rica to complete tomorrow’s matchups.
