Nigeria Records No Ebola Case Amid Congo, Uganda Outbreaks

A Senior Registrar in Family Medicine at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Dr Damilare Shoyemi, has assured Nigerians that there is no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in the country despite reports of an outbreak in the Republic of Congo and Uganda.

Speaking on Issues in the News, a current affairs programme on Radio One, Dr Shoyemi explained that the Nigerian Health Emergency Department has already put preventive measures in place to safeguard citizens against the spread of the disease.

He advised that travelers, people arriving from affected regions, and individuals returning from bush areas should be properly screened for possible symptoms of the disease.

The medical expert also warned against poor hygiene practices, noting that Ebola can be contracted through contact with infected rodents such as rats and mice, as well as bush meat including bats and gorillas.

However, he emphasized that Nigerian health agencies remain vigilant and fully prepared, urging citizens to maintain proper hygiene practices including regular hand washing, sanitizing of their environment, wearing face masks, and creating awareness within their communities.
