Obidient Movement Says Obi Will Consult Widely Before Considering ADC Ultimatum

The Obidient Movement has responded to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over its directive that coalition members resign from their former political parties before being formally recognised.

‎ADC’s interim national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, had announced on Thursday that a final order had been issued, requiring members to quit their previous parties, though no timeline was set for compliance.

‎In a statement on Friday, the national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to the coalition but stressed that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would consult widely before making any decision.

‎Tanko noted that Obi had aligned with the ADC-led coalition following the Anambra governorship election, extending that support to the 2027 general elections.

He, however, expressed concern that the coalition’s earlier resolution appeared to be shifting.

“His Excellency Peter Obi, as a leader with a broad constituency, has always taken time to consult widely before making major political decisions. He did so before joining the coalition, and he must also do so before responding to any ultimatum,” the statement read.

‎The Obidient Movement also raised questions about how the ADC intends to zone its presidential ticket, insisting that issues of equity and fairness must guide the process.

“Considering that the presidency is currently held by the south, issues of equity and fairness must guide such decisions if the party truly aims to secure victory in 2027,” Tanko said.

‎He added that Obi is not desperate to become president but is focused on building a Nigeria that works by addressing poverty, improving the economy, and reforming healthcare, education, and security.

‎Background checks show that Obi formally joined the ADC-led coalition in July while retaining his Labour Party membership.

Coalition leaders had earlier agreed to allow him to complete pending political activities with the LP before fully crossing over.
