Oparaoji Battles Hard To Retain Lagos Tennis Cup Title

Uche Oparaoji required four hours 20 mins to retain his crown at the 2022 Lagos Tennis Cup today.

The grueling men’s final looked to be headed for an upset as Oparaoji slumped 4-6 to Peter Lawal in the first set, only to bounce back with some commanding play to take the last two sets 7-5, 7-6(7) at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

A completely exhausted Oparaoji could barely stand for the trophy presentation but the feeling of pocketing half a million naira should be enough to refresh the champion.

Lawal received N250,000 for his losing efforts in the final.

Earlier in the day, the women’s final produced a one sided contest between winner Marylove Edwards and rising star Oiza Yakubu.

Edwards outclassed her opponent 6-1, 6-1 to take home the N500,000 prize money while Yakubu became N250,000 richer for her runner-up effort.

This year’s Lagos Tennis Cup brought together the top 8 ranking men’s and women’s players to compete for honours.
