Abuja – The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has officially resolved to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the Southern region of the country.
The decision was reached after a series of high-level consultations by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), which met in Abuja on Monday.
A communique issued at the end of the meeting stated that the move was in line with the party’s long-standing zoning arrangement aimed at promoting equity, fairness, and unity among Nigeria’s diverse regions.
Speaking to journalists after the NEC meeting, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, explained that the resolution was unanimously endorsed by party leaders and stakeholders across the six geo-political zones.
According to him, zoning the ticket to the South would strengthen the PDP’s chances in the 2027 general elections, while also reaffirming the party’s commitment to rotational leadership.
He said, “The party has listened to the voice of Nigerians and stakeholders. After careful deliberations, the NEC resolved that the presidential ticket of our great party for the 2027 elections is zoned to the South.”
Some party stalwarts, particularly from the North, were reported to have initially raised concerns, but the NEC assured that the decision was taken in the interest of national unity and party cohesion.
Meanwhile, political analysts believe the zoning decision will set the stage for an intense contest among top Southern politicians, including former governors, senators, and serving party leaders, who are expected to begin consultations ahead of the primaries.
The PDP’s zoning announcement comes amid growing speculations over alignments and realignments within opposition parties, as the race for 2027 gradually takes shape
