The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME), and UNICEF are partnering to host a one-day symposium on Tuesday at the Lagos Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, focusing on safeguarding the Nigerian child.
The event, themed “Equipping the Nigerian Child for the Future: How Prepared Are We?”, will gather media leaders, policymakers, and child-rights advocates to assess the nation’s readiness to secure the well-being of its children.
Millions of Nigerian children face growing risks in education, nutrition, health, safety, and climate-related emergencies.
Recent attacks on schools, rising malnutrition, and displacement due to conflict and flooding have intensified the need for urgent intervention.
Participants will explore practical solutions to improve safe learning environments, strengthen child protection systems, enhance welfare services, and build climate resilience for children across the country.
The symposium will also emphasize the importance of ethical, child-focused media reporting to highlight the challenges children face and drive action at local and national levels.
UNICEF and event organizers stress that children bear the greatest burden of insecurity and poverty despite contributing least to these crises.
They hope the dialogue will foster stronger partnerships, evidence-based policies, and greater national commitment to ensuring every Nigerian child can thrive.
