Sanwo-Olu Launches €410m Omi Eko Project to Transform Lagos Waterways into Economic Corridors

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Lagos waterways from mere geographical features into vital corridors of economic opportunity, innovation, and sustainable mobility.

Speaking at the official launch of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) “Omi Eko Project” at the Five Cowries Terminal, Falomo, Ikoyi, on Friday, the governor described the €410 million initiative as “a bold statement of Lagos’ intent to lead Africa in building a connected, climate-smart transport ecosystem.”

“For centuries, water has defined the rhythm of Lagos — from the trade canoes of our ancestors to the ferries that glide across our lagoon today. But history is not just what we inherit; it is also what we choose to create,” Sanwo-Olu said in his keynote address.

He said the project embodies Lagos’ strategic vision to turn its blue economy into a catalyst for urban renewal, job creation, and environmental protection.

“This is not just a project unveiling. It is a comprehensive, future-oriented blueprint that merges technology, environmental stewardship and smart design to create waterways that are not just navigated but optimized,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the Omi Eko Project would ease road congestion, cut travel time, reduce carbon emissions, and stimulate economic activities across waterfront communities.

The governor also acknowledged the collaboration of the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Union, the European Investment Bank, and local partners in bringing the initiative to fruition, emphasizing that “vision without partnership is a dream deferred.”

Former Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, commended the governor’s focus on sustainable mobility and urged the state to integrate the waterways project with its growing rail and road transport systems for greater efficiency.

Also speaking, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the Omi Eko initiative aligns with the state’s THEMES+ agenda by offering residents a reliable, modern, and environmentally friendly alternative to road travel.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, noted that the project would advance the state’s climate resilience goals and promote smart infrastructure through eco-friendly innovation.

Reiterating his administration’s long-term vision, Sanwo-Olu said Lagos is “charting a new course” where its waterways will no longer be barriers but “corridors of opportunity, safety, and progress.”

“With Omi Eko, we are lifting not only boats but lives, businesses, and communities. Lagos is ready to lead Africa’s urban transition — boldly, sustainably, and inclusively,” he declared.
