The Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Councils and Ancillary Matters has urged members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), FCT chapter, to suspend their ongoing strike.
The committee pledged to engage with the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, to address the doctors’ demands and find a lasting resolution.
At an emergency meeting held yesterday, the committee, led by its chairman, Senator David Jimkuta, met with the leadership of the striking doctors.
Senator Jimkuta acknowledged the negative impact of the strike on healthcare delivery in the territory and appealed to the doctors to return to work while negotiations continue.
He commended the doctors for their dedication, describing their struggle as a selfless effort aimed at strengthening the country’s fragile healthcare system rather than pursuing personal gain.
The FCT chapter of NARD had declared an indefinite strike last week over unresolved issues, including unpaid salary arrears since 2023, unexplained deductions from allowances, and the non-upgrade of resident doctors who have completed specialist training but remain on medical officer pay.
