Senate Summons WAEC, Minister Over Sudden 2026 Exam Guideline Changes

The Senate has summoned the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and the Head of the Nigeria Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mr. Amos Dangut, to explain the introduction of new guidelines for the 2025/2026 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE).

The decision followed a motion by Senator Sunday Karimi, who said the new guidelines abruptly altered subject requirements for students preparing for the May/June 2026 examination.

Karimi noted that the revised structure introduced new subjects into the curriculum and imposed them on SS3 students who had never been taught the content.

He warned that the directive effectively compels final-year students nationwide to adopt a curriculum originally designed for SS1 students, who are scheduled to write WAEC in 2027/2028.

According to him, the policy forces SS3 candidates to take two or three additional subjects in the upcoming exam despite having no prior preparation.

Other lawmakers backed the motion, describing the rollout as rushed, poorly planned, and potentially disruptive to students’ performance.
