As the world commemorates International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) on May 4, 2025, stakeholders across Nigeria have reiterated the urgent need for improved welfare, remuneration, and working conditions for firefighters, both in active service and retirement.
At a commemorative event held in Lagos, the President of the Fire Protection Association of Nigeria (FPAN), Alhaji Sheu Dambata, lamented the deteriorating state of fire stations across the country, describing them as hazardous to the safety and wellbeing of the personnel.
Speaking through the Chairman, FPAN Board of Fellows, Mr. Peter Onyeri, Dambata advocated for a commensurate salary structure, insurance coverage, and comprehensive welfare packages to reflect the dangerous nature of the firefighters’ job.
“Firefighters put their lives on the line daily to prevent disasters. They deserve better pay, working conditions, and full insurance coverage,” Onyeri emphasized.
Also speaking at the event, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, represented by Mr. Amodu Shakiru, Head of the Public Education Department, condemned frequent attacks on firefighters at emergency scenes.
“These attacks are unwarranted and dangerous. Firefighters are public servants risking their lives to protect lives and property,” she said.
Adeseye also identified traffic congestion as a major hindrance to swift response to fire incidents, urging motorists to always yield the right of way to emergency vehicles with blaring sirens. She further warned against prank emergency calls, which waste critical response time and resources.
The LSFRS Director commended the Lagos State Government for its continued investment in fire and rescue equipment and urged other state governments to follow suit to reduce fire-related losses.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Mr. Jumade Adejola, Alhaji Fatai Bello, Mr. Ola Afoke, and Mr. Samuel Usoro, Commander of Tincan Ports, Nigerian Ports Authority.
International Firefighters’ Day is observed annually to honor the sacrifices and daily risks taken by firefighters around the globe in protecting communities from fire and other emergencies.
