A medical tribunal in the United Kingdom has heard how a consultant anaesthetist, Dr. Suhail Anjum, abandoned a patient mid-operation to engage in sexual activity with a nurse.
The incident occurred at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester in September 2023, when Dr. Anjum excused himself for what he described as a “comfort break,” leaving a colleague to monitor the patient under anaesthesia. Instead, he went to another theatre, where he was discovered in a compromising situation with a nurse identified only as “Nurse C.”
A shocked colleague who witnessed the scene reported the matter to hospital authorities.
Though the patient was not harmed and the operation was completed successfully, the General Medical Council (GMC) described the doctor’s conduct as unprofessional and potentially risky.
During the hearing in Manchester, Dr. Anjum admitted the allegations, describing his behaviour as “shameful” and a “serious lapse of judgment.” He apologised to colleagues, the NHS Trust, and the public, while appealing for a chance to continue his medical career in the UK.
The tribunal continues its deliberations on possible sanctions.
