The United Nations has reimposed sweeping economic and military sanctions on Iran, a decade after they were lifted under a landmark international nuclear deal.
The measures took effect after the UK, France, and Germany, three key partners to the 2015 agreement triggered the snapback mechanism, citing Iran’s continued nuclear escalation and lack of cooperation.
In response to recent US and Israeli bombings of its nuclear sites and military bases in June, Iran suspended inspections of its nuclear facilities, a legal obligation under the 2015 deal.
Iran’s President, Mr. Masoud Pezeshkian, insisted that the country has no intention of developing nuclear weapons, describing the renewed sanctions as “unfair, unjust, and illegal.”
