The federal Government has been commended for addressing the shortage of manpower in the University of Lagos following the high rate of brain drain being experienced in the institution like most other key sectors in the country as a result of the Japa Syndrome.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola gave the commendation at a news briefing in Lagos.
She said already, the federal government had approved the recruitment of three hundred and fifty people to beef up the staff strength of the University of Lagos following the exit of some lecturers and other staff that had left the country in quest for greener Pastures.
She explained that although the number of those approved by the federal government for recruitment into the University’s workforce would go a long way at addressing shortage of staff in the institution, the University still needed more hands to cope with the manpower deficit in the University.
Prof. Ogunsola stressed that looking at the standard set by UNESCO in terms of student-teacher ratio for universities, the University could not but ask for more lecturers and other staff.
While Prof. Ogunsola said that the renovation of student hostels that were out of shape sometime ago had been completed last year, she announced that the University was set to provide additional seven thousand, eight hundred and thirty-seven bed spaces for students by next year under a Tetfund and Public Private Partnership arrangement.
Giving a reports on the giant strides the University of Lagos had made in the last one year, Prof. Ogunsola said that the institution got about Twenty-four billion naira as research grants in the year 2025.
She also announced that the university had expanded from twelve faculties to nineteen so as to provide more knowledge space for students coming into the university.
