World Cup Qualifier Updates: Nigeria, South Africa Battle to 1-1 First Half Draw‎

Nigeria’s Super Eagles and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana went into the break level at one goal apiece after a lively first half in Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup qualifying clash at the Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein.

‎The hosts started on the front foot, pressing high and keeping the Nigerian defence under pressure. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was called into early action, denying South Africa’s Nkota after a quick counterattack.

‎In the 18th minute, tempers flared as South Africa’s Ngezana and Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman were booked following a rough challenge.

Moments later, Nigeria suffered a setback when Ola Aina limped off with a hamstring injury, paving the way for Bright Osayi-Samuel.

‎The breakthrough came for the hosts in the 24th minute when a Mokoena pass released Nkota down the flank.

His delivery into the box was turned into Nigeria’s net by captain William Troost-Ekong, handing Bafana Bafana the lead.

‎But the Super Eagles responded before halftime. Ademola Lookman combined neatly with Moses Simon, whose well-placed cross found defender Calvin Bassey.

His header drew Nigeria level, though replays hinted at a possible handball in the build-up. With no Video Assistant Referee (VAR) available, the goal stood.

‎After three minutes of added time, the referee brought the first half to a close with both sides locked at 1-1. South Africa remain focused on consolidating their lead at the top of the group, while Nigeria chase a crucial win to climb higher in the standings.
