Nigeria’s Super Eagles and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana went into the break level at one goal apiece after a lively first half in Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup qualifying clash at the Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein.
The hosts started on the front foot, pressing high and keeping the Nigerian defence under pressure. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was called into early action, denying South Africa’s Nkota after a quick counterattack.
In the 18th minute, tempers flared as South Africa’s Ngezana and Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman were booked following a rough challenge.
Moments later, Nigeria suffered a setback when Ola Aina limped off with a hamstring injury, paving the way for Bright Osayi-Samuel.
The breakthrough came for the hosts in the 24th minute when a Mokoena pass released Nkota down the flank.
His delivery into the box was turned into Nigeria’s net by captain William Troost-Ekong, handing Bafana Bafana the lead.
But the Super Eagles responded before halftime. Ademola Lookman combined neatly with Moses Simon, whose well-placed cross found defender Calvin Bassey.
His header drew Nigeria level, though replays hinted at a possible handball in the build-up. With no Video Assistant Referee (VAR) available, the goal stood.
After three minutes of added time, the referee brought the first half to a close with both sides locked at 1-1. South Africa remain focused on consolidating their lead at the top of the group, while Nigeria chase a crucial win to climb higher in the standings.
