The Federal Government has inaugurated an eight-member committee to design a harmonized National Heritage and Citizenship Studies curriculum that will be compulsory in all Nigerian universities.
The committee, made up of representatives from the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the National Universities Commission (NUC), was inaugurated by NOA Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu.
He said the initiative is part of the Nigeria National Identity Project, the National Values Charter, and the Citizens Code, which outline the values expected of every Nigerian.
Issa Onilu explained that Citizenship Education is already embedded in primary and secondary school curricula. He added that polytechnics and colleges of education are also in the process of adopting it, while the new committee will work to fully integrate the programme into the university system.
Speaking on behalf of the NUC, Mrs. Florence Onuoha said the harmonized curriculum is designed to help universities produce patriotic, citizen-focused graduates.
The inauguration also featured a presentation on the history and importance of citizenship education and the need to strengthen national identity and patriotism among young Nigerians.
