Media Analyst Urges Nigerians to Strengthen Security Awareness, Community Vigilance

Nigerians have been urged to remain security-conscious by knowing their neighbours, conducting due diligence within their communities and promptly reporting suspicious individuals or activities to the appropriate authorities.

The call was made by broadcast journalist and policy analyst, Adeyemi Adesanya, during Media Watch, a programme on RadioOne.

Adesanya said security is a collective responsibility and stressed that effective crime prevention depends on the active participation of citizens alongside security agencies.

He also highlighted the important role of traditional rulers and community leaders in maintaining security, noting that they are often the first to receive information on suspicious activities within their communities and can work closely with law enforcement agencies to prevent crime.

According to him, affluent Nigerians should support vulnerable members of society, arguing that such assistance could help reduce the risk of criminal activities driven by economic hardship.

Adesanya further called on the government and security agencies to increase investment in technology, including closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and drones, to strengthen surveillance, improve intelligence gathering and enhance crime prevention.

He also urged parents and guardians to instil sound moral values in their children and lead by example, maintaining that proper upbringing remains essential to discouraging criminal behaviour among young people.
