Nations Mourn, FG Postpones NAFEST 2025 for Healing

The Federal Government has postponed the 2025 National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST), earlier scheduled to begin today Saturday, November 21, 2025, in Enugu State, citing the nation’s somber mood following recent security tragedies.

In a statement, the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy said the decision was made after a careful review of the emotional and psychological climate across the country.

The Ministry noted that recent attacks in parts of Nigeria have caused widespread grief, affecting families and communities nationwide.

Honourable Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa approved the postponement after consultations with key stakeholders, stressing that holding a national celebration at a time when many Nigerians are mourning would be “insensitive and inconsistent with the values of empathy and solidarity.”

NAFEST, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s strongest platforms for cultural unity and national cohesion, had already attracted participation from over 28 states, with contingents in Enugu preparing for what was expected to be a vibrant display of cultural resilience.

However, the Ministry explained that pausing the festival is a gesture of respect to grieving families and an affirmation of the country’s shared humanity.

It added that the festival’s goal of promoting peace, unity, and cultural pride must align with the mood of the nation.

A new date will be announced after further consultations with state governments, cultural bodies, and security agencies to ensure a safe and fitting atmosphere for the event.

The Ministry expressed gratitude to participating states, cultural troupes, partners, and the general public for their understanding.

It reaffirmed its commitment to delivering an even more impactful and unifying NAFEST once a new date is confirmed.
