Sanwo-Olu Inaugurates Seven Badagry Roads, Unlocks Gateway for Tourism and Regional Growth

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday inaugurated a major network of roads in Badagry Division, describing the projects as critical infrastructure to boost tourism, facilitate trade, and improve regional connectivity.

The roads—Aradagun–Mosafejo–Ilado–Imeke Road, Samuel Ekundayo/Toga Road, and Hospital Road (Phase I)—span across Badagry Local Government and Olorunda Local Council Development Area, opening up access to historical, cultural, and commercial landmarks in the ancient coastal town.

Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the new road infrastructure forms part of his administration’s commitment to inclusive development under the THEMES Plus Agenda, with tourism and transportation identified as key pillars.

“Badagry is not just a town; it is a gateway to West Africa, a historical jewel, and a future hub of economic growth. These roads will drive tourism, connect communities, and improve access to sites that define Nigeria’s heritage,” the Governor said.

The newly inaugurated Hospital Road provides access to the Agiya Tree Monument, Nigeria’s First Storey Building, Early Missionary Cemetery, Heritage Museum, Eko Theatre, and LASU Foundation. Situated near the Badagry Marina, it also serves as a vital corridor for water transportation, connecting Lagos Mainland and Island to neighbouring West African countries.

Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed that strategic investment in roads like Hospital Road and the Imeke–Ajido–Iworo corridor was a deliberate step to strengthen Lagos’ position as a tourism and trade hub.

“This project is more than a road—it is a foundation for sustainable tourism, regional trade, and community prosperity. We are not only improving mobility but reinforcing our economy,” he noted.

He added that the Aradagun–Mosafejo–Ilado–Imeke Road, which complements an earlier commissioned 6.65km dual carriageway and 300-metre bridge, will serve as an alternate route to the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, reducing congestion and facilitating smoother logistics.

The Samuel Ekundayo/Toga Road, another key artery, now provides alternate access from Badagry Roundabout to Limca/Ibereko, further linking internal communities and connecting to major commercial corridors.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Mr. Olufemi Daramola, said the road projects were designed to enhance flood resilience, ease movement of goods and people, and elevate the standard of living for residents.

Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the people of Badagry for their patience during the construction phase and acknowledged their unwavering support during the last local government elections.

“You have stood by us with patience and faith, and today we are delivering on our promises. Your loyalty inspires us to do more,” he said.

He assured residents of Oko Afo, Ilogbo, Eremi, and Pota that their road networks would be inaugurated soon, reiterating his administration’s resolve to bridge infrastructure gaps in all parts of the state.

Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that the Nigerian Correctional Service staff quarters, located along Hospital Road, had been upgraded into a modern 12-room bungalow, demonstrating the administration’s holistic approach to development.

Dignitaries at the event included Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, members of the State Executive Council, federal and state legislators from Badagry, and traditional leaders.

The Governor concluded by urging community leaders and residents to safeguard the infrastructure.
